ESPR & Digital Product Passport

Product transparency as a supply chain challenge

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) significantly expands the traditional ecodesign requirements: from energy performance to circularity, durability, repairability and, through the Digital Product Passport (DPP), full transparency over a product’s life cycle. That transparency calls for data that is still rarely available in one place today. Pantarein helps you build the required data structures.

The ESPR and the DPP in practice

The ESPR enters into force in phases, with product-group-specific delegated regulations that set a timeline and scope for each category. Textiles, electronics, furniture and construction products are among the earliest priorities. The DPP will become mandatory for every regulated product group.

What do the ESPR and the DPP require?

  • Insight into the environmental performance of your product across its full life cycle
  • Material data: composition, origin, recycled content, hazardous substances
  • Information on repairability, replaceability of parts and expected service life
  • A technical infrastructure to create, manage and make the DPP accessible via a QR code or data carrier
  • Supplier data that are complete, validated and up to date

Which businesses does this affect?

  • Manufacturers and importers of regulated product categories that fall under the ESPR first
  • Businesses working with complex products or materials for which life cycle data is not yet systematically recorded
  • Businesses that see product transparency as a commercial advantage: in tenders, in retail relationships and with investors
  • Organisations that want to embed the DPP in a broader approach to supply chain transparency and CSRD reporting

Our approach

For the Digital Product Passport, building a data architecture is essential. We help you do this in a way that is sustainable and scalable.‍

  • Product group analysis and ESPR timeline – Which of your products fall under which delegated regulation, and when? What are the relevant requirements for your category and what is the implementation timeline?
  • Data inventory and gap analysis – Which DPP data do you already hold in-house – in product management, procurement, R&D? What is missing, and how can you approach data collection from suppliers in a pragmatic way?
  • Supplier engagement for product data – We guide you in setting up a structured process to collect and validate material, sustainability and life cycle data from your suppliers.
  • DPP architecture and implementation support – We help you make the right choices on data structures, registers and technical infrastructure – in line with the requirements of the applicable delegated regulation.
  • Software support – Together, we assess which platforms or tools can support DPP management and the product data flow: from data recording and supplier surveying to creating and making available the passport itself.

What does it deliver?

  • Compliance-readiness: meeting the mandatory DPP requirements for your product categories within the required timeline
  • Product transparency as an asset: contracting authorities, retailers and investors are asking for more product information – those who can supply it are in a strong position
  • A foundation for your circularity strategy: DPP data makes reuse, repair and end-of-life management concrete and demonstrable
  • Synergy with the CSRD: life cycle data and material information are also relevant input for ESRS reporting

Related services

  • Supplier engagement – Mobilising suppliers for the product data the DPP requires.
  • PPWR – Packaging compliance as part of the broader approach to product transparency.
  • CO₂ footprinting – Life cycle emissions as part of DPP reporting.
  • CSRD reporting – Product data as input for ESRS reporting on raw materials and circularity.
