Avoided emissions quantify the emissions your customers can avoid by using your products or services. They provide a powerful way to demonstrate the positive contribution your solutions can make to the climate transition, but only when they are calculated and communicated carefully. Avoided emissions should therefore always be reported separately from your own Corporate Carbon Footprint.
Calculating avoided emissions allows you to quantify how much emissions your product or service can help the end user avoid. This makes the positive climate impact of your solutions visible, including beyond your own value chain.
A transparent methodology also helps you communicate this impact credibly and show clearly what emission reductions your product or service can actually deliver.
There is currently no international standard for avoided emissions. Pantarein has therefore developed its own methodology, based on the WBCSD Guidance on Avoided Emissions.
We work in four steps:
The greatest climate impact you can make comes from reducing your own carbon footprint. That is why measuring and reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions should always come first. Avoided emissions should never be used to offset your own carbon footprint. They are an additional step towards greater climate maturity, once the foundations of your own climate strategy are in place.
From there, you can build further on:
Ready to demonstrate your positive impact?
Avoided emissions show how your products or services can contribute to the climate transition. But that impact is only credible when it is supported by a robust calculation and communicated carefully.
