Why a sound CO₂ footprint is crucial

Many companies still do not know where they stand on their CO₂ emissions. Others already have measurement in place, but their data are not sufficiently robust.

For most organisations, measuring scope 1 and 2 emissions is straightforward. But scope 3 emissions – often responsible for the largest share of your total emissions – are a different story. Data are frequently spread across entities, countries and suppliers; emission factors vary; and assumptions differ. As a result, data quality is not sufficient for assurance or to answer your customers' questions.

In many companies, CO₂ data do not yet drive decision-making. This poses a risk, because external pressure is growing through the CSRD, customer requirements in tenders, CBAM and SBTi commitments.

Which businesses does this affect?

  • Companies mapping their CO₂ emissions for the first time
  • Companies facing customer requests about their CO₂ footprint, scope 3 emissions or product emissions data
  • Organisations seeking to make their existing CO₂ footprint more robust and audit-proof
  • Companies preparing for reporting or external assurance
  • Organisations working towards SBTi validation

Our approach

We approach the CO₂ footprint as an analytical instrument: a means of understanding which emissions are strategically decisive, where supply-chain dependencies lie and which emissions can genuinely be influenced. Our approach works for any starting point, whether you are beginning from scratch or looking to improve an existing measurement.

We work in four steps:

  1. Scope definition and data inventory - Together, we define the company-specific scope of the analysis. Which emission categories are relevant? Which data are available, which are missing, and how do we approach data collection pragmatically?
  2. CO₂ footprint calculation - In line with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1, with attention to methodological consistency, transparent assumptions and reproducibility.
  3. Hotspot analysis and strategic interpretation - Where are the largest emissions? Which emissions are structurally tied to the business model? Which can be influenced operationally?
  4. Reporting and embedding - Results translated into clear reporting for internal use, stakeholders or external verification. We ensure that the measurement methodology, data architecture and assumptions are documented and transferable, so that you can update and improve the footprint year after year.

What does it deliver?

  • Strategic insight: which emissions can be influenced, and which call for strategic choices?
  • A basis for decision-making: input for investment decisions, decarbonisation plans and climate-risk analyses
  • Compliance readiness: CSRD, SBTi validation and external assurance
  • Commercial position: responding (proactively) to customer requests and Scope 3 engagement across the supply chain
